No.12-Throwing of a handful of dust by Rasulullahﷺ.

Throwing of a handful of dust by the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) at the unbelievers: When the Battle of Badr began, the Holy Apostle prayed and threw a handful of dust or sand at the enemy, symbolical of their rushing blindly to their fate. This had a great psychological effect. Every act in the battle is ascribed to Almighty Allah, as it was in His cause, and it was undertaken except by His command. Numerically the odds against the Muslims were three to one. In other ways they were at a disadvantage: of arms and equipment they had but little, while the enemy were well-found; they were inexperienced, while the Quraish had broughttheir foremost warriors. In all this there was a test, but the test was accompanied by gracious favours of countless value: their Commander was one in whom they had perfect faith, and for whom they were ready to lay down their lives; the rain refreshed them; their spirit was unshaken; and they were fighting in Allah's cause. Thus the trial or test became itself a blessing. The Miracles Of The Qur'an 9 The Ifoly Qur'an describes it as under:

"Maka bukanlah kamu yang membunuh mereka, akan tetapi Allah jualah yang menyebabkan pembunuhan mereka. Dan bukanlah engkau (wahai Muhammad) yang melempar ketika engkau melempar, akan tetapi Allah jualah yang melempar (untuk membinasakan orang-orang kafir), dan untuk mengurniakan orang-orang yang beriman dengan pengurniaan yang baik (kemenangan) daripadaNya. Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Mendengar, lagi Maha Mengetahui

{Surah al Anfaal: 17)

The Rasulullah throws dust to the enemies   in The Battle of Badr and The Battle of Hunain

Imam Muslim narrated on the authority of Salamah who said: “We fought by the side of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at Hunain. When we encountered the enemy, I advanced and ascended a hillock, A man from the enemy turned towards me and I shot him with an arrow. He (ducked and) hid himself from me. I could not understand what he did, but (all of a sudden) I saw that a group of people appeared from the other hillock. They and the Companions of the Prophet turned back and I too turned back defeated.

I had two mantles, one of which was wrapped around my waist (covering the lower part of my body and the other I put around my shoulders. My waist-wrapper became loose and I held the two mantles together. (in this downcast condition) I passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, who was riding on his white mule.

He said: “The son of Akwa’ finds himself to be utterly perplexed''. When the companions gathered around him from all sides, the Messenger of Allah got down from his mule, picked up a handful of dust from the ground, threw it into their (enemy) faces, and said: “May these faces be deformed!''.

There was no one among the enemy whose eyes were not filled with the dust from this handful. So, they turned back fleeing and Allah the Exalted and Glorious defeated them, and the Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, distributed their booty among the Muslims.”

In another narration by Imam Muslim, al-Abbas said (in a long Hadith): “...And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who was riding on his mule looked at their fight with his neck stretched forward and he said: “This is the time when the fight is raging hot''. Then the Messenger of Allah took (some) pebbles and threw them in the face of the infidels.

Then he said: ''By the Lord of Muhammad, the infidels are defeated.” Al- Abbas said: ''I went round and saw that the battle was in the same condition in which I had seen it. By Allah, it remained in the same condition until he threw the pebbles. I continued to watch until I found that their force had been spent out and they began to retreat”

As for the battle of Badr, the Quran says about it in Surah (verse) al-Anfal (the spoils of war.

As for what has taken place in the battle of Humanin, the Quran says:

“Truly Allah has given you victory on many battle-fields, and on the Day of Hunain (battle) when you rejoiced at your great number but it availed you naught and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you then you turned back in flight. Then Allah did send down His calmness on the Messenger and on the believers, and sent down forces (angels) which you saw not, and punished the disbelievers. Such is the recompense of disbelievers.”

(Surah At Taubah - 25-26)
